Magens Bay: The Beach That Actually Lives Up to the Hype
April 8, 2026

Everybody tells you about Magens Bay before you get to St. Thomas. The taxi driver, the guy at the rental counter, your cousin who went once in 2011. So you show up half-expecting to be underwhelmed.
You won’t be.
The road in does most of the work — a winding climb over the mountain, then a drop through thick green until the water shows up all at once through the trees. It’s a mile-long crescent tucked so deep into the hills that the Atlantic never really finds it. No breakers. No undertow. Just flat, warm, ridiculous blue.
It’s the rare beach where you can wade out a hundred feet and still be standing. Great if you’ve got kids. Also great if you’ve got a drink and no ambitions.

A few things worth knowing. There’s a small entry fee, and it’s worth it — real bathrooms, lifeguards, a snack bar that does a decent burger. Kayaks and paddleboards rent by the hour. And if a cruise ship is in port, the middle of the day gets loud. Come before ten or after three and you’ll have a different beach entirely.
Walk east along the sand until the crowd thins out. There’s a stretch down there where it’s mostly you, the sea grape trees, and whatever pelican is working the shallows. That’s the version of Magens Bay people are actually talking about.
